How to Strip Paint from Miniatures

Sometimes a model needs a fresh start. Whether you bought used miniatures or want to redo old paint jobs, stripping paint safely preserves the model for repainting.

Choosing the Right Stripper

Different materials require different products. Simple Green works great on plastic and metal. Isopropyl alcohol handles resin. Never use acetone on plastic - it will melt!

  • Plastic: Simple Green, LA's Totally Awesome
  • Metal: Acetone, brake fluid, Simple Green
  • Resin: 91%+ isopropyl alcohol
  • All materials: Biostrip 20 (safe but slower)

The Stripping Process

Soak models for 24-48 hours in your chosen solution. Scrub with an old toothbrush to remove loosened paint. Repeat if necessary. Some paints are more stubborn than others.

  • Use glass or metal containers
  • Fully submerge models
  • Agitate occasionally for better results
  • Wear gloves when handling
  • Scrub in circular motions

After Stripping Care

Rinse thoroughly with water after stripping. Let models dry completely before priming. Check for missed spots - small amounts of old paint won't affect the new job.
